Capt. Sidney J. Hynes, FNI, MM

Captain Hynes is educated as a Master Mariner and Naval Architect, with over 30 years experience in marine transportation, offshore oil and related industries.

 2007 to Present - Executive Chairman OCEANEX INC. St. John's, Newfoundland

In 2007, Captain Hynes formed a partnership to purchase Oceanex Income Trust a deal valued at $230 million.

With more than 350 employees, Oceanex provides intermodal transportation services throughout eastern Canada and carries approximately half of all cargo to Newfoundland. Working with an experienced executive team, Oceanex manages a fleet consisting of 3 ice-class vessels (one container and two RO-RO) running from Montreal to St. John's and Corner Brook. In addition to its marine service, Oceanex through its inland division, coordinates the movement of cargo to and from its piers including the major container port in St. John's, Newfoundland.

From 1985 to 2008, Captain Hynes was President of Canship Limited, and Chairman of the Board of Canship Ugland Limited which manages and operates six new high-tech crude oil shuttle tankers serving the Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose oil fields offshore Newfoundland and specialized tractor tugs capable of managing firefighting, escorting, and docking services for tankers at the offshore transshipment terminal at Whiffen Head , Placentia Bay, Newfoundland.

From 1992-1996, Captain Hynes was a Director on the Board of Marystown Shipyard Limited.

In December 1999, Captain Hynes was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Marine Atlantic Inc. and is a former Acting President and CEO.

Captain Hynes has served and advised many national and international marine and offshore companies.

Captain Hynes many contributions to the marine community has included Membership of Memorial University Marine Institute's Advisory Board.
